General Questions: FAQ

Q: What is Natural Thyroid / Thyroid USP?

A: Thyroid USP is the official monograph (or specifications) set forth by the USP (United States Pharmacopeia) for PRESCRIPTION status desiccated thyroid.  NDT (Natural Desiccated Thyroid) is a natural preparation derived from porcine thyroid glands with prescription designation due to standardized and guaranteed levels of T3 (Liothyronine) and T4 (Levothyroxine) thyroid hormones. It is the active ingredient, regulated by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and USP (United States Pharmacopeia).

Q: How do Nature-Throid™ and Westhroid™ differ from other NDT products?

A: Nature-Throid™ and Westhroid™ utilize Thyroid USP (a 4:1 ratio of T4 to T3).  The difference lies in the inactive ingredients.  Our inactive ingredients are completely hypoallergenic offering an alternative for patients with various food sensitivities/allergies.

Q: What is the difference between Nature-Throid™ and Westhroid™?

A: There is no difference between the two products.  Westhroid™ is our original product, first introduced in 1930s.  However, it was reformulated to be identical to Nature-Throid™. We kept both products for their namesake, but they are both hypoallergenic with identical formulations.

Q: Have Nature-Throid™ or Westhroid™ ever had issues with stability?

A: Nature-Throid™ and Westhroid™ have never been recalled for inconsistent or fluctuating dosage (compared to other natural and synthetic thyroid medications on the market today).

Q: Where can I get Nature-Throid™ / Westhroid™?

A: Obtaining these products requires a prescription from your physician. If you experience difficulties while filling your prescription please call us directly at (877) 797-7997.

Q: Can Nature-throid/Westhroid be taken sublingually? How does it taste?

A: Although we are aware of numerous patients taking Nature-Throid/Westhroid via sublingual route, we cannot recommend this mode of administration as there is no data to substantiate it. For individuals who choose this route, it would be a decision determined between the physician and the patient.

RLC cannot comment on the “taste” from one brand to another, as this is something that we do not check or have on profile.

Q: Can Nature-throid/Westhroid tablets be split in half?

A: Nature-Throid tablets are required by the FDA and USP Monograph to verify its content uniformity.  Thus, it would be perfectly acceptable to split the tablets to obtain approximate half dosage of the tablet.
